Covering Hearings
We use the verb cover to describe the act of an attorney committing to appear for a hearing. Only one attorney can cover a hearing. So once someone covers the hearing, it becomes unavailable to other attorneys. We call that connection between the hearing and the attorney an appearance.
To cover a hearing, simply locate the red "Cover" button on the hearing and press it. If the button is not there, the hearing is likely already covered. You will see a banner at the top of the page telling you that if so.
Note that you are personally obligated to appear at the hearing. You may not outsource or otherwise find a substitution to appear in your place. We have specific compliance regulations with our clients and we require the covering attorney to be the person appearing.
You may be prompted with a disclaimer such as the one shown below before the cover operation is complete.
The cover itself is complete once you finish that disclaimer.
You will receive email confirmation as well if you are subscribed to that notification.
